During the bushfires that burned across much of Australia in late 2019 and early 2020, a major problem faced by even those away from the fires was that the air quality suffered greatly for a long time, enough that people had to be careful about going outside if they were part of an at-risk population.

According to the US Center for Disease Control, wildfire smoke can cause irritation in your lungs and also make chronic respiratory conditions worse. Pregnant women should consider taking steps to avoid inhaling wildfire smoke because of physical changes that occur in the body during pregnancy.
