#32: Cool Burning
We’ve talked a lot about the wildfires that devastated Australia in 2019 and early 2020, and they were certainly a very memorable event. But did you know that not all fires that have happened in Australia were accidental and devastating?
The aboriginal peoples of Australia used to practice what is called “cool burning.” They would carefully set and control fires that would burn at such low temperatures that they could clear out the brush without damaging the tree canopy. They did this in order to clear lands for hunting and to get rid of the brush in a managed way, which helped prevent major wildfires.
