#4: What Are the Odds?
Like many children, I was taught lightning safety when I was young, and while it’s vitally important, it left me with a confused notion that people getting struck by lightning is a common and frequent occurrence. That makes me wonder: What actually are the odds of getting struck by lightning?

Sources online say that anywhere from 270 to 300 people are struck by lightning each year in the USA, with about 10% of those people dying. Over your lifetime, you have a 1 in 15,300 chance of being struck by lightning—according to one source, you are four times more likely to get a perfect score on the SAT than to be struck by lightning. So despite what I thought when I was young, it’s not something most people have to worry about.
