#43: Northeastern Blizzard of 1978
The memories of bad storms linger in the minds of the people who experienced them. And reading about the terrible blizzard that hit the northeastern United States in 1978, it’s easy to understand why it was so memorable: some areas got more than two feet of snow in just two days, 100 people died, and there was $520 million of damage—and that’s in 1978 dollars.
It’s interesting to read this take by a meteorologist, who thinks that the storm catching people unaware is why it was able to do so much damage. These days, with better weather forecasting, we hope we aren’t caught unaware in the same way. And in the meantime, it’s important to always be prepared with emergency equipment and food.
