#4: The Science of Hairodynamics
This has to be the most glamorous photo of a track meet we’ve ever seen. In case you’re wondering if this photo is real or not, we are here to confirm that it is authentic. This 1967 photo of an Abilene, Texas, track team was featured as a Sports Illustrated cover story. This wasn’t just any old track team.
The young women on this team made headlines for their huge hair and lightning-fast track records. The team’s coach, Margaret Ellison, made headlines by encouraging her team to arrange their hair into larger-than-life up-dos. Their giant beehive hair made headlines and gave the team 15 minutes of fame. Although people questioned the aerodynamics of running with such giant, heavy hair, the novelty definitely drew attention back in the day.
