#35: “She Don’t Hate”
This photo isn’t necessarily weird, but it’s definitely heartwarming. This photo is of a mother and son attending a pride walk in 1985. The two of them are wearing shirts with messages of support for each other and the queer community. They both look happy to be at the pride walk, with fun pins attached to their T-shirts and warm smiles.
We guess this photo is an example of something considered a novelty back in the day but is more normalized now. Violence and stigma still exist for many in the LGBTQ+ community, but it was even harder back in 1985. Seeing a mother publicly supporting her son as a member of the queer community in the ‘80s was more of a novelty than the norm. Today, this photo is heartwarming and fun, but back in 1985, the press viewed it more as a bold statement.
