#24: The Amphibious Bicycle
If this bicycle looks weird to you, you’re not alone. This bike looks like someone tied a bunch of plastic balls to various parts in an attempt at decoration. In truth, this bicycle was coined an “amphibious cycle” because it was meant to operate on land and water. The idea behind this design is that hollow, air-filled floats allow the bike to float on any body of water with ease.
This photo was taken at the Paris Exposition in 1932, where the inventor debuted his design. The story goes that this man rode the bike across a large swimming pool to prove that his invention worked. The inventor of the first amphibious cycle probably thought they were going to change the game. Sadly, these never took off in quite the same way as normal bicycles.
