#13: There’s a Flamingo in My Bathroom!
At first glance, you might assume this is a pile of plastic flamingo yarn ornaments. Look again. This flock of flamingoes is very, very real. So, what’s the context here? This photo was taken by Miami Metrozoo employee Ron Magill in August 1992 during Hurricane Andrew preparations. The forecast warned that Hurricane Andrew was going to be a category five storm, so zoo staff had to take precautions and protect the animals.
Ron and other zoo staff members created a makeshift habitat for the flamingoes in the women’s restroom. They haphazardly threw hay on the floor and made sure all the sinks and toilets were full of fresh water. Before Ron walked out of the makeshift habitat, he snapped this odd photo of all the flamingoes flocked together in the corner.
