#14: John Wojtowicz’s Mugshot
John Wojtowicz might not be a household name, but he at least got a movie based on his life. If you have seen the 1975 film Dog Day Afternoon, you know the gist of John’s interesting story. John made an infamous name for himself when he tried to rob a Brooklyn bank in 1972.
This booking photo of John shows a man who held seven hostages in the bank for 14 hours before being arrested and sentenced to 20 years in prison. During the stickup, John and his robbery partners, Salvatore Naturile and Robert Westenberg, allegedly ordered pizza, threw money out the windows, and accidentally fired a shot when he dropped his rifle. Ironically, John applied for a bank security guard job when he got out of prison. The bank wasn’t interested.
