#45: A Civil War Shako
It’s a pretty rare occurrence to find an authentic, rare piece of history in your home. Even if a home is historical, chances are that most historical objects have been cleaned out or moved. This person hit the historical jackpot when looking through their grandmother’s basement. They came across this unique hat and knew they had come across a treasure.
This hat is a Civil War shako, which was a tall hat worn by militiamen during the war. There are a lot of replicas out there worn by reenactors, but this one appears to be authentic. This person most likely has an unknown relative who might have served as a Union soldier in the Civil War. Not a bad discovery for a casual browse through grandma’s basement!
