#10: Hidden History
Home decor trends come and go, but cast iron is forever. It might not be in style in modern homes, but most people who purchase and restore historic homes are prepared to incorporate a good amount of cast iron into their updated renovation projects. This homeowner discovered a hidden cast iron vent when they were peeling back layers of old insulation and carpet. It’s an original feature of the home.
The vent is especially neat because it has the year 1897 engraved along the edge. This is the same year that the home’s deed says it was built. This vent is over 100 years old, but it doesn’t look like it’s a day over 40! Cast iron is truly one of the sturdiest materials around. However, we can only imagine how hot this floor vent got under certain circumstances. Yikes!
