#20: A 100-Year Old Marriage Certificate
We have no idea how important documents tend to get stuck in the walls of historic homes, but it happens. Someone found this beautiful marriage certificate stuffed in the wall of his basement. He was replacing a damaged wall when this old, taped piece of paper unexpectedly fell out. He unfolded it and was surprised to see that it was a very important document.

It’s the marriage certificate of John Evans and Gertrude Faulkner. They were married in West Virginia in 1922. The certificate is beautiful, with illustrated flowers trailing along the border. We should really bring back this look. Marriage certificates these days usually don’t have any kind of embellishments or illustrations. Why did they change?
