Tarantino’s films are so successful because he brilliantly builds his own world in each work, but they all, somehow, seem to be rooted in our own reality. There are countless pop culture references throughout his movies. Steve Buscemi plays Buddy the waiter in Pulp Fiction. He asks Mia what $5 shake she wants by asking if she wants a “Martin & Lewis or Amos & Andy” shake.
Although this reference is a bit dated, many viewers can still get it. Buddy is referencing two famous comedic duos from decades past. Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis were two white men, while the Amos ‘n’ Andy show starred two Black men. To put it simply, Buddy the waiter is asking if Mia wants a vanilla or chocolate shake.
