Time Lining Up
Tarantino is one of the most well-known pioneers of non-linear storytelling, where events are portrayed out of chronological order. He brought this storytelling device into the mainstream with his second film, Pulp Fiction. This film is thought by many to be a modern classic, with good reason. Pulp Fiction masterfully flows between multiple storylines, taking place at different points in time.
We get a taste of this non-linear storytelling from the jump with the opening scene of the film. The characters Honey Bunny and Pumpkin are talking in a diner, and we see Vincent walking to go to the bathroom in the background. As we watch the film, we realize that this opening scene takes place at the end of Vincent and Jules’ storyline.
