The Devil is in the Details
Tarantino’s characters are always well-developed and complex, even (or especially) if they’re evil. The character of Hans Landa in Inglourious Basterds is no exception. Landa has many tactics for tracking down Jews, earning him the abominable nickname “The Jew Hunter.” The viewer is not always explicitly told about his tactics; sometimes we are shown them without dialogue.
In this movie’s well-known first scene, Landa is searching for the Dreyfuss family. In this scene, we see him subtly checking one of the LaPadite women for her pulse in order to see if her heart is racing faster than it should be. It’s this subtle body language that tells the viewer that he is a man used to being in control of a situation, a man to be feared.
