On a Count to Three
There is a similar element recurring in the storylines of both Inglourious Basterds (2009) and Django Unchained (2012). In Inglourious Basterds, British officer Archie Hicox blows his cover when he counts to three on his fingers in the English way instead of the German way (apparently, countries have different counting methods). This same element of counting on fingers is brought up in Django Unchained when Dr. Schultz casually counts to two.
When people count the German way, they start with their thumb as the first digit. Dr. Schultz is shown counting this way in Django, whereas Archie counted starting with his pointer finger. When he did this, it gave him away as a British army officer posing as a German officer. It’s this attention to detail that keeps bringing viewers back to Tarantino’s films.
