#2: What’s Your Flavor?
Raise your hand if you remember learning that the tongue has different “flavor sections.” You might have heard this “fun fact” as a kid. The truth of the matter is that this “fact” is totally false. There are no specific areas of your tongue that taste specific flavors.
The tastebuds that discern certain flavors are spread out all over your tongue. Your tongue doesn’t taste sweet in front, bitter in the back, and salty on the sides. That misinformation was largely spread by the taste map created by Edwin G Boring in the 1940s. Although the taste map has been disproven many times over, it still persists in the popular imagination.
