#14: Who Built the Pyramids?
Archaeologists and historians are always learning new things about ancient civilizations. It’s a truly fascinating field of study. With constant scholarship comes constant discoveries and new ways of thinking about historical events. A great example of how our understanding of the past can change is the history of the Great Pyramids.
A prevalent narrative about who built the Great Pyramids persists to this day despite scholarship that proves otherwise. Archaeological discoveries in the 1990s show that the people who built the pyramids were paid laborers. To be more specific, these laborers were farmers who were unable to work their lands due to flooding at the time. Although ancient Egyptians did partake in slavery, they at least paid the laborers behind this architectural feat.
