#5: Unhelpful Information
The AIDS epidemic ravaged certain populations of people during the 1980s and ‘90s. Along with a mainstream denial that it was happening, there was plenty of ignorance and misinformation surrounding HIV and AIDS. One big misconception about the virus was how it spread from person to person. Many adults spread misinformed opinions to younger people, causing more confusion.
Some people even remember their teachers spreading misinformation in health class. That’s not exactly encouraging to hear. In particular, one person vividly remembers their health teacher saying that you can catch the virus simply by hugging someone who had it. This is absolutely not true, but this false information stuck with people for many years.
