#32: A Real Bell Curve
This photo looks a little weird, so let us explain. This is a well-worn pin-loaded weight stack plate on a weight machine. People put a metal pin on the weight that they want. The numbers on the side are the weight in pounds. As you can see, the paint has worn off where people most often put the pin.
It seems like most people choose between 35 and 60 pounds as their weight. The worn-off paint represents a real-life example of a bell curve. The normal distribution of weight skews toward the middle. In other words, we can see the average weight that people choose when lifting weights. Interestingly, most people don’t choose 95 and instead round up to 100. Human nature is so predictable.
