Predictive Fiction
Part of the reason that fiction is so widely consumed is that even though the stories are not fully true, they hold a mirror to life that makes us reflect. However, it is rarely the case that a fictional story can actually predict a real-life event. Oddly enough, that is exactly what happened when Morgan Robertson published “The Wreck of the Titan,” a story that seems to eerily prophesize the sinking of the Titanic.
As was true of the Titanic, the ship in Robertson’s tale had too few lifeboats, which proved to be fatal when it eventually sank. The ship in the story also happened to sink after hitting an iceberg in the North Atlantic, just like the Titanic. What’s even more strange is that even the names of the ships are nearly identical.
