Jokes in the Face of Death
Death may be one of the few guarantees in life, but it seems that we all face it differently. While some accept their mortality, others struggle to come to grips. Based on this interesting historical fact, it appears that St. Lawrence was among those who had long accepted the notion that he would cease to exist someday.
There is no better evidence of this acceptance than the rumors about what St. Lawrence said moments before his excruciating death. As he lay roasting on a gridiron, he joked to his executioners that he was already cooked on one side and that they would be wise to turn him over. No wonder St. Lawrence become the patron saint of jokesters and cooks alike.
