#15: Whining vs. Protesting
Baby Boomers were young and on the frontlines of protests during the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s and the opposition to the Vietnam War in the 1970s. A lot of people did important work that moved American society and culture forward to a more equal and fair future. That effort to improve society for everyone is still happening, but some older folks don’t see it that way.
You may have heard some older people call protests for LGBTQ+ rights and Indigenous rights “whining.” For some reason, they don’t see the protests of today as a continuation of what they fought for back in their day. Everyone deserves to be treated equally and fairly, and the Millennial generation has largely focused on fighting for the rights of indigenous and LGBTQ+ people. Just because a different decade is fighting for a different cause doesn’t mean it’s any less important.
