#34: The Sad Reality of the Tasmanian Devil
Tasmanian devils are known for their aggressive nature and distinct vocalizations. Something you may not have known is that they face a unique and deadly threat in the form of a contagious cancer known as Devil Facial Tumor Disease (DFTD). This disease is a rare phenomenon in the animal kingdom, as it can be transmitted through direct physical contact, such as biting during confrontations, which are common among these feisty marsupials.
DFTD manifests as disfiguring tumors around the mouth and head, making feeding difficult and ultimately leading to death. The disease has had a devastating impact on Tasmanian devil populations, drastically reducing their numbers in the wild. Efforts to manage and combat DFTD include captive breeding programs and research into potential treatments or vaccines to prevent further decline in these iconic and unique creatures.
