#31: New Island Created in the Red Sea
An eruption in the heart of the Red Sea took place in December 2011. The eruption resulted in lava, smoke, and a new island. A mixture of volcanic ash and water vapor makes up the white clouds visible in the bottom photograph. It was reported that some local fishermen had witnessed lava fountains reaching up to 100 feet tall. They were absolutely terrified.

According to satellite images, this eruption was rather different from previous ones in the area. Thanks to the conditions of lava that solidifies on land, they reported that this new island was likely to remain there. Although the island has grown rather quickly, it has since shrunk due to erosion.
