#58: Studio 54
Studio 54 is perhaps the most well-known nightclub in New York City’s history (and we all know there have been a lot of them). Located in Midtown Manhattan, the club started operating in 1977. You could say the place launched at the right place and the right time—at the peak of the disco trend.
Studio 54 quickly became a second home for most of New York’s elite, including celebrities from the entertainment and fashion industries. It quickly became famous worldwide, partly because of the scandalous stories. Studio 54 only operated as a nightclub for nine years and closed in 1986, but the new owners retained the legendary name. Today, it serves as a production venue for the Roundabout Theatre Company.
