#56: Closing the CBGB: The End of an Era
The CBGB club was another iconic New York establishment. It opened in 1973 as a dive bar that later became a biker bar; those were only two stages. Although the owners wanted to create a blues club, it quickly became a famed location for punk rock and new wave bands, where bands including Blondie and Ramones performed.
In the early 2000s, the CBGB faced controversy over rent disputes, and many bands performed at the club, hoping to donate revenues and keep the popular establishment alive. However, the bar eventually closed in October 2006. Patti Smith, a big fan of the place, played the last performance.
