#24: St. Patrick’s Day Turns Chicago River Green
Usually, when a river changes colors, it’s due to algae or some other natural occurrence. Not the Chicago River, though! Each year, as a St. Patrick’s Day tradition, Chicago decides to dye its famous river green to celebrate the holiday. You might’ve seen it yourself, but seeing it from a great distance makes it a sight.
There’s irony in the fact that Chicago’s Irish make up only 7.5% of the population, but since the Irish community and the city are about the same age, this fun little stunt is a great way to celebrate a piece of Chicago history.
