#57: Mount Rushmore
Today, when we think of Mount Rushmore, we all think of the Mount Rushmore National Memorial commemorating the faces of four American presidents. However, as seen in the picture below, Mount Rushmore wasn’t always adorned by the faces of these historical figures. The creation of the colossal sculpture started in 1927 and took 14 years to complete.

Mount Rushmore is located in the Black Hills of South Dakota, and this area was chosen as the location for the famous memorial with a goal in mind: to increase and encourage tourism in the area. It certainly worked, as the memorial is the top tourist attraction of South Dakota, and thanks to the memorial, tourism is the second largest industry in the state.
