#16: Bakery-Inspired Invasion
Those familiar with French culture know that baked goods like croissants are important to French cuisine. However, you probably did not know that this affinity for bakery items once led to a full-fledged invasion. While it seems unbelievable, a bakery was what initially inspired the French to invade Veracruz.
This story began when a French baker living in Mexico complained to the king of France that the Mexican army had ransacked his bakery and that the Mexican government refused to pay damages. In response, the French decided to block every port of entry in the entire Gulf of Mexico. Clearly, this caused some complications and even led to battle.
