#18: Flying in the Key of F
The buzzing sound of a pestilent fly is hardly music to your ears, but that sound is more musical than you might think. While flies don’t carry a tune, they are at least incredibly consistent with the pitch they produce while flapping their wings. Researchers have found that the sound of a fly’s buzz registers in the key of F every time.
This is because a fly flaps its wings about 190 times a minute. This rate equates to a pitch on the F scale. Apparently, multiple types of bees also have the same sonic characteristics. Still, even though we can apply some music theory to a fly’s buzz, it’s unlikely you’ll ever look forward to hearing that sound.
