#22: Where the Moss Grows
Outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers have probably heard the old adage that moss grows on the north side of trees. This saying is often used to help people navigate through the wilderness. However, you probably shouldn’t follow that advice if you’re ever lost in the forest. The truth is that moss can grow just about anywhere.
Okay, to be fair, moss is more likely to grow on the north side of trees and rocks, especially if you’re in the Northern Hemisphere. The north side is often more shady, cool, and damp, making it a perfect ecosystem for moss to thrive. However, the idea that moss only grows on the north side isn’t entirely correct. If the conditions are right, moss can thrive all over a tree or rock, regardless of cardinal direction.
