#6: This Unique Book Cover
In 2013, David Pearson, under the direction of Jim Stoddart, used the radical idea shown here to blank out the author and title. It refers to Winston Smith, a protagonist of Orwell’s 1984. Smith worked at the Ministry of Truth. His job was to censor references to political figures considered ‘unpersons’ in newspaper archives by deletion.

Designing and executing the idea took a lot of work. It required obliteration of the print by a process that printed, debossed, and flattened the type, leaving more of a dent than a letter. The art designer worked closely with the printers to achieve the desired result.
