#33: A Scammy Thermometer
This story is proof that you can’t always believe the manufacturer’s directions. Someone purchased this no-touch thermometer a few years ago. It was advertised as “disposable” because it operated with “non-replaceable” batteries. While “non-replaceable” products certainly exist, this shopper had a feeling they were being scammed.

They decided to pry open the thermometer once the batteries died. They were surprised to find two very replaceable AAA batteries inside. The manufacturer of this thermometer was trying to advertise it as “disposable” so shoppers would come back and buy another one when the batteries died. How sneaky is that? It always pays to investigate a little further.
