A Hefty Price to Pay
If you live in the English-speaking world, aren’t you glad that you don’t need to learn Latin to read the Bible? Thanks to translation, we can read and study the Bible in English. However, that was not always a permissible idea. In fact, it was such an unthinkable thing; you could even go to prison for it!
William Tyndale was the first man to translate the Bible from Latin to English, and the Catholic church was not very happy with that. They thought that translating the Bible would lead to misinterpretations. They may be correct in that idea but burning Tyndale alive for translating the holy book is not our idea of a fair way to express displeasure.
