#30: The Most Jarring Difference
For this person, the weirdest and most jarring thing about American culture is the obsession with the concept of “freedom.” It seems very ironic to them that so many people are obsessed with being “free” while spending most of their lives at work trying to make ends meet. Is being “free” feeling tied to our jobs and overworking for a company that doesn’t care about us?
This is an over-generalization, but this person has a point. Sure, we have freedom of speech and many other liberties that many other countries don’t have. However, with our lack of paid time off and idolization of hustle culture, it seems like we’re all spending our days working ourselves to the bone even though we don’t want to.
