Distraction is a fantastic way to calm a child having a meltdown. More often than not, they can get so caught up in the tantrum itself they might completely forget what it is they were even upset about in the first place. A good old distraction will do a great job at making them pause in their steps and give them something new to focus their energy on that isn’t making all of us adults grimace and suffer.
An interesting note on these kinds of questions: they’re also great for helping trauma victims. Asking people simple questions like what their name is and where they’re from helps them refocus their minds and helps them out of the shock.
