#11: Bread or Beer
Grain has been a food source for thousands of years. There is evidence of bread as far back as 14,000 years ago, discovered in the Black Desert in Jordan, according to BBC. Even though it is one of human’s oldest foods, it’s not as popular as its liquid cousin, beer. Beer is believed to have been fermented for the first time thousands of years ago by either the Sumerians or Ancient Egyptians.
Even today, it’s way more popular than bread. This restaurant sidewalk sign knows this fact and plays into it with their anonymous quote. It says, “Every loaf of bread is a tragic story of grains that could’ve become beer but didn’t.” Ain’t that the truth? We have a feeling this sign is for a pub or a brewery. Otherwise, they’d probably be a lot happier about the existence of bread over beer.
