English isn’t easy. Grammar rules are made and broken, pronunciations vary widely throughout the states, and some native speakers talk so fast that there’s no hope of figuring out what they’ve said. Even worse, the human brain doesn’t always process language as well as we’d hope, resulting in some rather embarrassing answers to questions we are asked that make zero sense. It’s happened to me, and I know it’s happened to you because it’s all a part of life. Thankfully, one Twitter user shared her story of a funny misunderstanding and started a cascade of amusing and embarrassing responses in the best way. Enjoy!

What an ominous answer. You know, these types of comments are often made flippantly but turn out to be true. Even though they were talking about two different things, the universe may have been playing a little joke and giving a little hint. I hope Quinn checked up on the guy and made sure he survived his birthday.
Who knows, maybe it turned out to be 81 degrees on his 81st birthday! That would be neat—also, Happy Birthday to this man! Hitting your 80s in this decade can’t be what he expected. He’s seen a lot. He’s older than Tupperware and the microwave oven. That’s impressive.
