#24: Ah, the Naivety of Childhood
From the 1950s through the 1980s, “going steady” was the term for dating someone exclusively. It was first used as a term for people intent upon engagement and often accompanied a promise ring. It’s no wonder that Blue didn’t know what it was, as 6th grade is a bit young for lifelong devotion.

Still, I bet that boy was crushed by her answer. It probably took him a week or two to work up the nerve to ask her, and in one fell swoop, his hopes were dashed. He should have stuck around and offered to take her skating instead. Maybe she would have heard “dating,” and they’d be back on track!
