#21: Minnesota
Inbound moves: 48.6%
Outbound moves: 51.4%
Minnesota has seen a notable shift in fortunes, climbing five spots on the list of states witnessing mass departures. Residents are increasingly setting their sights on better opportunities beyond the state’s borders, with employment serving as the most compelling reason for this migration, outpacing the second-most common reason (family) by a substantial 18 percentage points.
High taxes, brutal winters, rising crime rates, and pandemic-induced job losses may also be fueling this exodus. According to December 2021 data from the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly 13,500 individuals bid adieu to Minnesota between April 2020 and July 1, 2021, marking it as the eighth-highest state for population decline through domestic migration.
