West Virginia’s winding country roads seem to lead the way for many Americans. The Mountain State made a remarkable leap, rising eight spots to claim the coveted third place for inbound moves in 2021. While nearly half of those entering West Virginia were drawn by job opportunities, a staggering 72% cited the pursuit of better employment as their reason for departing.
A longtime West Virginia resident emphasized the state’s close-knit communities, a simpler way of life, and a burgeoning manufacturing industry as compelling reasons to call it home. Despite these attractions, West Virginia grapples with one of the nation’s highest poverty rates, exacerbated by the declining coal industry.
