Kevinismus
The names we give our children can have an impact on the course of their lives, and that’s something they are well aware of in German culture. Kevinismus is a socio-cultural concept in Germany that reflects a negative preconception associated with individuals bearing trendy, exotic-sounding first names. The most prominent example is the name Kevin, which, like many such names, found its way into German culture from Anglo-American origins.
This phenomenon reflects the tendency of some to judge individuals based on their names, often making assumptions about their backgrounds, education, or social status. Essentially, Kevinismus highlights the societal stereotypes and biases that can be attached to names. Of course, we should know better than to judge people by their names, but unfortunately, this is a cultural bias that persists to this day.
