How to Stay Safe in the Wild

July 13, 2021 by Jessica Meyer

You’re ready to go on an adventure in the great outdoors but you’ve never done this before. Do you have what it takes to handle a night out in the wild? What if you become stranded in the woods or on a mountain top? Do you know what you must pack to ensure that you’re staying safe in the wild?

If not, we’re going to tell you how to. Today in this article, we’ll share some tips to help you stay safe in the wild whether you get stranded in the wilderness or you’re going on an adventure for the first time and not sure what to bring to be safe.

Packing Items

Make sure you pack a flashlight or have some sort of battery powered and solar powered light source. If you’re packing battery powered flashlights, then have back up batteries, too! Pack a rope, enough snacks for 24 hours and some water or a water filtration device to drink water safely from the rivers in the wilderness.

Prepared for an Overnight

Be sure you’re both physically and mentally prepared for an overnight stay. This is to be proactive for all possible outcomes. While most people head into the wilderness and come out just fine, others may get lost or lose daylight hours and must stay overnight. Be prepared for this being a possibility.

 Tell Someone Your Plans

Don’t forget to tell someone where you are going. They will need to know your route, destinations and if possible, GPS locations for all of the places you plan to hike or kayak or whatnot. Having one person or more that knows where you plan to be during your outdoor adventure in the wild will make a huge difference between your quick rescue or not.

Research the Conditions

Know where you’re going and what the conditions are in the area. This means weather and trail conditions because hiking or going in a river out in the wild means that your activities are based on whatever mother nature feels like dishing out to you. Become educated about the conditions and upcoming weather patterns prior to leaving for your trip.

These are just some of the best practices to stay safe in the wild. Please use these tips to keep everyone in tip top shape while you venture out into the wilderness in the future. We hope that you will be able t enjoy your next wild adventure, and our tips will make sure you’re prepared for all outcomes!
