Resting on the Front Lines of France, 1916
Amidst the chaos of World War I, Europe found itself engulfed in turmoil as the Central Powers sought dominion. The sheer scale of brutality caught many off guard, leading to a scramble for defense. Among those who stood firm were the Seaforth Highlanders, a formidable force born from the merger of the 72nd and 78th Highlanders in 1881.
Originally stationed in India, they swiftly redeployed to the frontlines of France in 1914, facing the horrors of battle at Givenchy before journeying to the distant lands of Iraq and Palestine. In this poignant image captured near La Gorgue, France, in August 1915, the Seaforth Highlanders find a moment of respite amidst the trenches, their faithful canine companion by their side, a silent witness to their struggles and solidarity.
