The Strangest Animals Found at the Zoo

August 1, 2021 by Jessica Meyer

There are some odd animals to be found at some zoos. Today we’re going to share some of the strangest animals found at the zoo. While you may not find these animals at your local zoo, they can be found all over the world at various zoos.

Axolotl

These adorable little salamander-like creatures look like a happy smiley alien. They are often seen at zoos but have started to show up in some local pet shops, too!

Albino Turtle

An albino turtle was found in China and while it’s rare, it was taken into the zoo to be held captive so that no one else would get it. Being in the zoo allowed the albino turtle to live longer than it would have in the wild.

White Alligator

The white alligator can be found in Louisiana where this alligator that has a rare pigmentation issue with its skin is located. There are only about 15 out of 5 million alligators with this rare defect.

Blue Lobster

Well, if you’ve ever seen a lobster then you know it’s typically red in color but over in the Chicago Zoo, you’ll find a blue lobster. There’s only one in a million lobsters that end up with this rare trait that makes for a beautiful strange experience to witness.

Okapi

This animal could easily be confused with a zebra, but it’s a relative of giraffes. Since most poaches have gone after this species, it’s rare to find one in the wild. So okapi are a strange animal species you’ll only find in zoos at various locations in the world.

Addax

This is a white antelope, basically. There was a recent study completed that found there may only be about three of these white antelopes in existence in the world today. They are native to the Saharan Desert.

Amur Tiger

There are only about 600 of these rare tigers in the world. They are native to Eastern Russia and can be found at the Alaska Zoo. In the 1940s there were only about 40 of the Amur Tigers alive so some work has been done to get their numbers up.

We hope that you enjoyed this list of the strangest animals found at the zoo. Whether you can see these animals at a zoo near you or not, we’re not sure, but we’re confident that these are the strangest animals that have ever been found at a zoo at some point in history or current times.
