How to Get Rid of Skunk Smell on Dogs

September 8, 2020 by Emma Cooper

When you live in the country with dogs, chances are that your pooch will encounter a skunk at some point. That skunky smell is horrible and your poor doggy doesn’t understand why you won’t hug him and let him indoors.

If your dog tried making friends with a skunk and lost, then you’ll love these tips that help you get rid of skunk smell on dogs.

What neutralizes skunk smell?

The only ingredients that will work to neutralize skunk smell are 1 quart of 3-percent hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda, and 1 teaspoon liquid dishwashing soap. These three ingredients can be mixed together to create a solution that will rid your pet from the gross scent of skunk.

Keep Doggy Outdoors

If you don’t want to de-skunk your entire home, then leave your dog outdoors after they’ve encountered a skunk. This may not be possible for everyone, so if you have to bring your dog inside then confine him to one room such as an enclosed porch or the bathroom while you prepare to de-skunk him.

Make the De-Skunking Mixture

To get rid of the skunk smell on your dog, you’re going to use this homemade solution. Mix the following ingredients together; 1 quart of 3-percent hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda, and 1 teaspoon liquid dishwashing soap. If you’d rather plan ahead, then you can purchase de-skunking shampoo online for your dog before a skunk encounter happens.

Clean and Rinse the Solution

Now that you have the homemade de-skunking solution ready, lather your dog up with it and rinse off the solution. Do not leave the homemade skunk scent remover on your dog for too long, the peroxide can bleach their fur. Rinse thoroughly with warm water.

Give a Bath

Now that you’ve rinsed off the de-skunking solution, you’ll give your dog a regular bath. Your dog’s regular shampoo will help get your dog back to smelling like himself. Use a towel to pat your doggy dry and let them run around happy and free.

If you’ve ended up smelling like a skunk during the cleaning process, you can take your clothes off and wash them with regular laundry detergent mixed with a half-cup of baking soda. This should get the skunk smell off your clothes if you only brushed against your skunky doggy.
