Originating in the 19th century, Pit Bull Terriers were bred from Old English Bulldogs and terriers for bull-baiting and later as versatile farm dogs. Pit Bulls are energetic, strong, and highly intelligent, requiring owners with consistent leadership. Without structure and socialization, their power and determination can be overwhelming. Negative press, dogfighting associations, and occasional serious incidents have fueled a reputation for danger, leading to heightened scrutiny and frequent inclusion on restricted breed lists.
