Why Do Cats Cover Their Noses When they Sleep

May 22, 2022 by Emma Cooper

Do you ever wonder why your cat always covers her nose when she sleeps? It’s actually a very common behavior for cats. There are several reasons why cats might do this, but the most common reason is because they are trying to keep warm.

Cats have a higher body temperature than humans, and they like to keep their noses covered so they can maintain their body heat while they sleep.

Sense of security

Cats are both hunters and prey animals, which means they’re preprogrammed to look for safe resting spots. As a result, before napping, they may locate a high lookout point or even bury their head in a laundry basket to provide them with peace of mind.

Blocking out the light

Cats are drawn to the heat, but snoozing in the hot sun poses a difficulty: how to keep the bright light out of your eyes. Fortunately, your cat has discovered that they may use their paws or tail to block out the sun. Many cats seem to like blackout curtains while attempting to sleep during the day, much like some humans do.

Comfort

Another one that you may identify with. There are a number of sleeping postures, and some of them just feel more natural. You may have a cat that curls up like a croissant or perhaps it reclines in a belly-up position.

Keeping their nose warm

Retaining body heat is critical for all creatures, and curling up in a ball is the greatest method for your cat to do so. During the winter months, you may notice your cat curling up more frequently, which might be accompanied by their paws being raised. This action keeps their tiny noses warm.

Tiredness

Cats prefer to keep their coats clean since this helps to keep their fur warm and healthy. It might be tiring work grooming for so long, especially when the desire to rest takes over. Sometimes the task isn’t completed, and the cat falls asleep while cleaning its face with a paw, which is where they sleep in that position.

Grasping their face in their paws to groom is a vital component of a cat’s existence, but it’s critical to keep an eye on your cat while they’re doing it to make sure they aren’t itching their faces as a result of allergies.

In conclusion, there are many reasons your cat might cover her nose when she sleeps. The most common reason is because they are trying to keep warm, but it could also be for comfort, security, or even just to block out the light. If you’re ever curious about your cat’s behavior, the best thing to do is ask your veterinarian.

They will be able to give you the best advice on why your cat is doing what she’s doing and how you can help her stay healthy and happy. Thanks for reading!
