It would be extraordinarily difficult to be informed that your newborn children had an incurable disease. Unless you’re a scientific researcher, there’s nothing you can do, and even if you are a scientific researcher, it’s still entirely likely there’s nothing that you can do.
Which is why the ending of this story is so heartwarming. John Crowley felt the need to do something about this tragic diagnosis, and luckily he was in a position that enabled him to take action. At first, he worked to raise money to fund research into his children’s disease, which is called Pompe disease. Then he teamed up with a glycobiologist to found Novazyme, a company that was involved in creating an enzyme treatment for Pompe disease.
